2024 Horticulture Class Series

An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Thursday, repeating until March 28, 2024
An introduction to the principles and practices involved in the identification, selection, development, production, and care of horticultural plant material. Completing the full Horticulture Series earns a program certificate. The cost for the series is $250 for an individual, $300 for two at same address, $125 Veteran/Active Military, $150 for Military plus one at same address. Single classes $35. Registration closes January 31st.

01/11/2024 INTRODUCTION TO HORTICULTURE: BOTANY – Classification, structure, growth and development, and environmental influences on horticulture plants.
01/18/2024 PLANT HEALTHCARE & INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT – Cultural techniques required for suitable pest management with an emphasis on host plant resistance, practical application, and managerial techniques.
01/25/2024 COMPOSTING EDUCATION – Strategies to increase composting of food and garden waste that will decrease the 33 percentage of organics that enter the waste stream.
02/01/2024 FIRE RESISTANT LANDSCAPES & URBAN FORESTRY – An introduction to the art, science, and practice of selecting, identifying, establishing, and maintaining landscape trees.
02/08/2024 PESTICIDE SAFETY – Pesticide labeling process information, and laws; proper application, methods, timing, rates, and handling of pesticides
02/15/2024 SOIL SCIENCE – NATURE & PROPERTIES OF SOIL – Understanding the physical and biological properties of soil, related to plant growth and development.
02/22/2024 DIAGNOSING PLANT PROBLEMS – Understanding what is normal; recognize typical plant problem symptoms; distinguish fungal, bacterial, viral, nematode, and abiotic diseases; develop a working plan for diagnosis of plant problems
02/29/2024 ENTOMOLOGY: INVERTEBRATE PESTS – Insect biology and physiology. Cultural techniques required for suitable pest management with an emphasis on host plant resistance, practical application and managerial techniques.
03/07/2024 NOXIOUS WEED EDUCATION & VERTEBRATE MANAGEMENT – Attributes that result in a plant being considered a noxious weed; define Class A, B, and C weeds; the biology of weed growth, development, and spread; accepted methods of weed management for home yards and gardens
03/14/2024 DROUGHT TOLERANT LANDSCAPES/ NATIVE PLANTS – A primary focus in sustainable landscaping is protection of water quality and water conservation, particularly in the drier areas of Washington State.
03/21/2024 PRUNING WOODY LANDSCAPE PLANTS – The reasons for pruning trees and shrubs; the processes that affect bud growth and development, and flowering and fruiting of trees and shrubs—and how those processes influence pruning decisions
03/28/2024 LAWNS & TURF MANAGEMENT – Turfgrass maintenance practices and how their interrelationships can be utilized to develop management systems.
