4-H Horse Projects

• Members must be enrolled in the Horsemanship project by May 1st. Your club may want you to also specify which of the following discipline you plan to participate in, options include:
  • Performance Horse, Western Games, Dressage, Reining, Green Horse, Mini Horse. Driving, Jumping, Horseless Horse.
• Members must be age 8 by October 1^st of the current 4-H year.
• Member’s project horses will be selected and included on the Club’s Member/Horse list by May 1^st
  • changes made after May 15^th are subject to the Grievance procedure.
• Members must be in possession of their animal 90 days before the county qualifying event.
• Members who are borrowing/leasing their project animals are strongly encouraged to use the WSU Feed Lease Agreement available through the Extension office.
• Signed Fair Release forms from each member are due by May 1^st, or prior to riding at the fairgrounds.

• At least one adult must be present to monitor and take responsibility for the rules being followed per arena.
• Need to have a signed waiver with the fairgrounds to ride in the arenas.
• No riding double, sidesaddle, or backwards, or any other style not appropriate to the discipline.
• Horse or pony will not be ridden on the grounds except in the arenas or designated paddock area between warm up and show arena. May remain mounted and at a walk between warm up and show arena/designated paddock area. During fair rider needs to be led to ensure the public stays at a safe distance.
• Penalty may include dismissal from fair or show and loss of ribbons and premiums.
• If a horse is being ridden in an arena, the only non-riders allowed in the arena are the judge and the arena steward or any people appointed as show personnel. During a practice a 4-H leader or a parent can be in the arena.
• Limit of Eight riders in warm-up arena. Everyone should be going in the same direction.
• Follow arena etiquette. Page 2 of U of Wy pamphlet.
• Warm up arena is only open to riders who will be riding in the next few events, not more than 8 classes. Preference is given to people closer their class time. Exercise of your horses is encouraged during free time before and after the day’s classes.
• No lunging in warm up arena if any other riders are present, one max at a time. Maximum of three horses may lunge in the big horse arena if no riders, two if there are riders. All horses must be kept on a lunge line, exceptions by Super. No lunging outside of arena
• Rider not having their mount under sufficient control at any time anywhere may be dismissed/disqualified from class at judge’s discretion.
• Galloping/running in the arenas is not allowed unless it is discipline specific.
•  The fall off any horse and rider MAY result in disqualification at Judges discretion
•  Horses are not allowed in the camping area during the fair. They must stay in the paddock areas.

Boots and ASTM SEI approved helmet must be worn when riding – all shows, all classes, all workdays, all ages. Boots must have a flat sole with a heal stop. Leaders must check members’ helmet to verify they are ASTM SEI APPROVED.  

Attire is discipline specific. See the WA 4-H Equine Project Rule Book  for specifics.

If available, Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors may participate in the Horse Judging/Knowledge contest. See Clallam County Fair Exhibitor Guide for information. Youth may qualify to participate in Horse Judging at State Fair.

• Enter animals using a Clallam County Fair 4-H Entry Form(s) postmarked by July 1st.
• All 4-H Members must participate in Showmanship.
• See Clallam County Horse Rules for specific requirements. Horses must be signed off by a club leader for each class (See Clallam County Horse Sign off sheet) by July 15^th or pre-fair.
• Members must do herdsmanship all four days of the county fair.
• No grievance to change horses will be heard after August 1^st.
• All animals must be able to be handled safely by the 4-H member. Animals demonstrating unsafe behavior must be removed from 4-H events and or fair.
• The Vet’s word is final. Always treat the vet with respect.
• Clallam County Fair Information

Eligibility for state fair is only open to intermediates and seniors. All state intent youth must notify their club leader. See the Clallam County Horse Rules for specific information about State Intent and qualifying for state fair. There is a mandatory State Intent meeting in the Spring.

4-H State Fair Exhibitor Guide

Qualifying for the 4-H State Fair:

• 4-H’er must notify the County Fair Barn Superintendent of the animal project they wish to enter at State Fair by Sunday morning of the county fair.
• Be a part of the qualifying allotment. See State 4-H fair Exhibitor’s guide, and or ask barn Superintendent.
• 4-H’er must attend the State Exhibitor meeting, time/day to be announced during fair, and register in Fair Entry before the end of the Sunday of the county fair.

At State Fair:

• Each Species of animal stalls as a county. All clubs in our county are stalled together and must share the responsibility of stall decorations.

Members share herdsman ship duties with all members of our county exhibiting the same project.
