Farm to School is gaining traction in Clallam County thanks to the efforts of the Port Angeles School District and the WSU Clallam County Community Health team, as well as support from WA SNAP-Ed and Action for Healthy Kids’ Healthy Meals Incentives Grant.

This school year, students will enjoy a different locally sourced and farm fresh produce item with their school meals every single month as part of the Harvest of the Month program. By the end of the year, the Port Angeles School District will have purchased more than 1000 pounds of fresh produce from several regional small farms for their Harvest of the Month and regularly scheduled meal program. \

Positive changes to school meals coincide with a growing garden-based education program managed by Amelia Depue, WSU Clallam County Extension’s Garden-based education coordinator. This fall, students are making stone soup during class time and harvesting from their very own school gardens.

Danielle Carson, WSU Clallam County Community Health program manager, launched the Clallam Farm to School program in 2022. Soon after, she was joined by Garden Education program coordinator Amelia Depue and Farm to School Consultant Stacey Larsen. The goal of the Farm to School program is to make garden-based education accessible to all students in Clallam County, and to increase the proportion of fresh and local foods served in school meals.
