“Brambling Along: Growing Raspberries and Blackberries in the Home Garden”

Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 10:30 am to 12 noon

Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden

2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim, WA 98382

Raspberries and blackberries can be a tasty addition to any landscape or garden that has sufficient room for the towering canes and aggressive root systems. A good understanding of the growth habits of these perennials and their care, however, is necessary for a good harvest year after year after year.

On Saturday, June 18, from 10:30 am to 12 noon, veteran Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about growing raspberries and blackberries (caneberries) at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden.

During the June 18 presentation, Jeanette will discuss

· The life cycle of a caneberry and how it impacts subsequent care of the plant,

· General types of caneberries and how to select varieties most appropriate for your desired use,

· Characteristics of an ideal planting site for caneberries, and

· Care and maintenance of caneberries including trellising, and pruning.

Jeanette will use caneberries growing at the Demonstration Garden to show how to trellis and prune these perennial plants. She will also touch upon problems commonly emerging from caneberry patches and how to prevent them.

Jeanette Stehr-Green is a berry enthusiast and has been a Clallam County Master Gardener since 2003. Jeanette writes gardening articles for the Sequim Gazette and the Peninsula Daily News and participates in a monthly gardening program on KONP. Jeanette was the 2012 Clallam County Master Gardener of the Year and has attained the Lifetime Achievement status with Clallam County Master Gardeners. Jeanette enjoys growing, picking, and eating berries and has grown raspberries and blackberries on the north Olympic Peninsula for more than 20 years. She also enjoys teaching others about growing berries (and learning from their experiences).

Digging Deeper presentations are held from 10:30 am to 12 noon on the first and third Saturdays of most months. Presentations cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners. Presentations are free and open to the public and are scheduled for 90-minutes to allow for demonstrations and questions from viewers. The June Digging Deeper presentations are scheduled to occur out of doors, in-person at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim. Attendees will be asked to mask regardless of COVID vaccination status and maintain an appropriate distance from others. Attendees are encouraged to check the Clallam County Master Gardener online calendar for updates about the location of the talk at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/.
