We are a vibrant agricultural county and WSU Extension has a long history of extending the knowledge of WSU research and benefits of horticulture to our community.

WSU Extension is dedicated to connecting and working in all areas of horticulture from the home gardener, school/community gardens and clubs to the commercial farmer/grower.

Community Horticulture is the way we interact with plants, people and our local ecology within urban and rural settings. WSU is dedicated to promoting and educating all areas of horticulture.

Here are some areas supported by WSU Extension and the WSU Master Gardeners of Whatcom County.

• Sustainable Landscaping & Stewardship Gardening
WSU Extension teaches techniques in implementing water-efficient gardening practices, using native plantings, using shade trees, wind breaks, natural hedgerows, buffers and screens to aid in the prevention of runoff and pollution while enhancing wildlife habitat.

• We Grow Garden
This urban garden is made possible by a partnership between Washington State University Extension, WSU Whatcom County Master Gardener Program, Northwest Youth Services, and the city of Bellingham Parks and Recreation Department.

• Soil Health & Composting
Healthy soil is the key factor for healthy plants and proper soil management protects our waterways. Composting increases soil’s ability to retain water, hold nutrients & helps to decreases runoff. Runoff pollutes water by carrying soil, fertilizers and pesticides to nearby streams.

• Sustainable Food Gardening Practices
Growing your own food is a joy and provides your family with healthy, organic vegetables. Sustainable garden includes practices that will produce the desired crop but also offer shelter for beneficial birds and insects, and protect resources of soil, water, and energy.
